Prepping the Pit

First, use a sharp knife to cut an avocado in half and remove the pit from the center. Once removed, wash off the excess pulp in cold water and wipe it down, making sure it is thoroughly clean since it will be sitting in water for a considerable amount of time.

The next step is rooting the pit. The root of the avocado pit is on the pointed side that faces upwards. The root is the most essential part of the plant and needs to be soaked in water for proper growth. To soak the root in water, place three or four toothpicks, pushing them deep into the pit along the center in an equidistant manner. Once the toothpicks are in place, place the pit resting on the toothpicks on the ceramic bowl. Fill the bowl with water , ensuring that the pit is submerged partially on the root side. For best results, place the ceramic dish in sunlight, refilling the dish to keep the water level optimum. This process needs to be continued until the the pit becomes a sapling, splitting in half, exposing the upper part with a small shoot with leaves and the lower submerged part with a root.

Once the shoot appears, plant it in slightly alluvial soil, ensuring that the sapling is provided water every alternate days. The process of growing avocado trees takes about three months, and it is best to let nature take its time to develop this wonderful fruit for you.
