Chance the Rapper is a mainstream rapper with critically acclaimed music that fans love. Known for his faith, he often raps about his life from his Christian point of view. In his song, “Blessings” he says, “I don’t make songs for free; I make them for freedom. I don’t believe in Kings; I believe in Kingdom.”

These powerful lyrics and his original beats influenced by gospel music with jazzy notes won him a Grammy. Chance often speaks of his faith and proclaims the name of Jesus both in his music and throughout his social media.

He recently shared “I’m on a plane headed out of the country on my first sabbatical. I’m going away to learn the Word of God which I am admittedly very unfamiliar with.”

This admission is refreshingly honest, and we applaud his focus and dedication to growing his faith, but it is his warning to other believers and fans which challenge us all.

“I’ve been brought up by family to know Christ, but I haven’t taken it upon myself to really just take a couple days (to) read my Bible. We all quote Scripture and tell each other what God likes and doesn’t like. But how much time do we spend as followers of Jesus to really just read and KNOW his Word. I’m definitely guilty of not devoting time to it,” he says.

Chance takes his role as a leader seriously. With the birth of his nephew, he shared a video on Instagram and followed with “he’s the first boy of the next line, and he needs his uncle to be educated.” The birth of his nephew seems to be one of the inspirations for his recent sabbatical.

In an industry where you are only as relevant as your last money-making hit, Chance the Rapper is taking a massive chance by taking time to grow his faith. We are proud of you brother and pray this season is a fruitful and beautiful one.
